Predicting the future is a popular pastime. The results are
seldom accurate. We seem to forget the simple laws of ordinary life and see
the future in a dramatic light, or end up with wild fantasies.
We have a tendency to fatalism. While some of us are convinced that the end
of the world is imminent, others see the inevitable in an increased consumption
of electricity. The rational fatalism of our time can be recognized in statements
introduced with "In the future, everybody will
" or "In
the future, no-one will ever
"
However, people are able to adapt to even the most difficult situations. While
the tools and methods we use to respond to the challenges presented by the
everyday evolve over time, the foundations of human nature remain the same.
Human future does not just happen but rather, it is made. This is why I am
in favor of idealism, hindsight and speculation.
hit2morrow is an interactive archery range created on the very
threshold of the future, in autumn 1999. Hitting the bull's eye shows the
archer a vision of the future. The animations depicting these visions were
derived from public debate at a moment when speculating about the future was
at an all-time high.
hit2morrow is an animated selection of human anticipations of the new millennium.
It includes some of the main areas in which big changes are expected to happen:
environment, science, technology, mind/religion. Many of the scenarios on
hit2morrow are connected to technology. Computers are seen either as the salvation
of the mankind or as the devil himself. Either way, the machine is mystified.
